This handcrafted Mother’s Day Card – Petals and Pearls was inspired by a few wonderful challenges that I follow. The main focal point of this card is the lovely image from SheepSki Designs. I just love the way the flowers surround the word “Mom”.
First, let’s talk about the creation of the background. I used Ranger’s Texture Paste in Opaque Matte over a zig-zag or chevron stencil and let it dry. This texture paste is so versatile and I love the dimension it gives my art projects. Then, I covered the background with a few different colors of water color paints. I wanted to experiment with my alcohol inks on regular paper to see what would happen. By adding a few drops of Watermelon Alcohol Ink I was able to get some nice hard splats. Then, I used Ranger’s Distress Collage Medium in Crazing. Once the collage medium dried, I spritzed the background with some Tarnished Brass Distress Mica Spray from Ranger. I love the effect this spray has. It really gave the background that little bit of sparkle and grunge I was looking for. Finally, I sanded and inked the edges of the background with Tea Dye Distress Ink.
In addition to this awesome background, I used a beautiful image from SheepSki Designs. First, I sized and printed the image. Then, I used my Spectrum Noir markers to color the flowers and sentiment. I used the Dark Red color family on the flowers and pink and purple on the word “Mom”. The flowers turned out so pretty. I also lightly sponged some Spun Sugar Distress Ink all over the white areas. To finish off the image, I fussy cut around the edges. Then, I adhered it to a piece of purple card stock and cut around the image again. Finally, I added Rose Gold Stickles around the edge of the purple card stock and the center of the flowers. To give the flowers a little more dimension, I added a small drop of Liquid Pearls to the top of the Stickles in the center of the flowers.
For the next step, I dug through my paper flowers for something similar to the flowers on the image. I found a few that looked very close, but they were a light tan color. So, I pulled out one of the Dark Red Spectrum Noir markers I used on the image and colored the flowers. To give them a little more depth, I inked the edges of petals with Tea Dye Distress Ink. Then, I glued some pearls to the center of the flowers and surrounded the pearls with Rose Gold Stickles.
To assemble the card I started with a 6 1/2″ x 5″ white card blank. I layered the background on to the card stock. Then, I adhered the image to the background with Zots. In addition to the flowers, I chose to use some gold ribbon and a matching knot on the left side of the card to balance out the design. Overall, I am really pleased with the final result. I am so happy with the way the flowers feel as if they were pulled from the image.
